Model Programs

Alliance for childhood supports and promotes new, innovative and community-based programs

The Just Play Project creates time and space for the child’s right to play. Community by community, Just Play Project trains and employs playworkers, empowers youth participation in the planning and design of public spaces, and enables cross-sector collaborations to create policies for the provision of play.

Alliance for Childhood serves as fiscal sponsor for the Just Play Project in Ithaca, New York.

Transforming their city through play, play:groundNYC advocates for young people’s rights by providing playworker-run environments that encourage risk-taking, experimentation and freedom through self directed play.

Pop-Up Adventure Play supports children’s play by applying principles of the UK-based field of playwork for schools, neighborhoods, museums, parks, and anywhere else that children can be found.

The Pop-Up featured in this video was funded in part by Allston-Brighton Children Thrive in Five (ABC Thrive) and the film was produced by Two Kazoos. Thank you!

Providence PlayCorps aims to activate neighborhood parks across the city with free play, art, and creative exploration in conjunction with the free federal summer meals program. Teams of trained play facilitators throughout neighborhood parks in Providence provide activities and materials to engage neighborhood children in physically active play, improving the overall safety of the parks while encouraging more children to take advantage of free, nutritious summer meals.

Under the gentle supervision of playworkers, KOOP’s programs create a safe place with ample time, materials and freedom for kids to explore their interests, synthesize their growing knowledge base and create what they’re dreaming about—all through self-directed play. KOOP provides opportunities for self-directed play through pop-up programs, adventure play afterschool programs and camps, and KOOP time during the school day.

The Adventure Playground at the Berkeley Marina is a wonderfully unique outdoor facility where staff encourage children to play and build creatively; climb on kid designed and built forts, boats, and towers; ride the zip line; or hammer, saw, and paint. These low risk activities create opportunities for children to learn cooperation, meet physical challenges and gain self confidence.
